History Of The Nargila

The nargila pipe, which is sometimes called a hookah or shisha pipe (other spellings include hooka, narghile, and sheesha), has been used around the world for centuries. Nargila and shisha are the terms used in the Middle East and Arabic countries, with ‘nargile’ being the common word for the pipe in Turkey. ‘Hookah’ is the word used in the country of origin: India. Since its creation, the pipe has become a pastime for recreation and socializing around the world, spreading to the United States in the twentieth century. The hookah was invented in India some time in the 16th century. Tobacco was brought to India by Europeans and quickly became popular among the rich and landed classes. The hookah was invented as a tool to try to lessen the negative health effects of smoking tobacco. In theory, the hookah works like this: Smoke is passed through water at the base of the pipe, which removes impurities – for instance dissolving some of the nicotine from the smoke – resulting in a cleaner smoke. The nargila is a central part of many cultures in the Middle East, as well as still being hugely popular in India. It is thought that the original pipes from India were fairly simple devices made of coconut shell, and it was in Turkey and the Middle East that the pipe was crafted into something closer to what we recognize today. In most countries throughout the Middle East there are hookah cafes, similar to a coffe shop in the Western world. Friends gather together to smoke and chat. These cafes had begun to pop up in other European countries and the United States in recent decades, however their growth has been stunted by new bans on smoking in public throughout many European countries and the US.Hookah lounges and cafes are particularly popular in Western countries with college students looking to embrace some exotic culture. Smoking in this way first started to catch on in the States in the 1960s, largely due to the hippie generation and the anti-Vietnam war movement. Many people emphasize the social aspect of smoking the nargila. The experience is more about enjoying time with friends and less based on an addictive need to smoke, as with cigarettes. However, while hookah tobacco generally contains less nicotine than cigarettes, because of the volume of smoke that is often consumed in a hookah smoking session it is still possible to develop a nicotine dependence if you don’t smoke in moderation.

Substances used for smoking hookah need not be completely dry. The most commonly used substance (known as tobamel or maassel) is a 1:2 mixture of tobacco with a sweet substance such as honey, molasses, or semi-dried fruit. Originally tobacco was mixed with one of these sweeteners to form jurak (e.g. Zhaghoul brand), a flavorless, moistened tobacco. Fruit-flavored shisha got its start in the late 1980s when Egyptian tobacco companies experimented with flavored tobacco as a way to transition people away from cigarette smoking. Today, shisha tobacco comes in many flavours, such as apple, strawberry, melon, cappuccino or mint, and is often mixed with dried fruit extracts.

In a hookah, tobamel (maassel) is not directly ignited but is heated to a high temperature using lit coals. These coals rest on a metal mesh or perforated aluminum foil which covers a clay or metal bowl containing the tobacco. When a user inhales through the hose, the coals heat the shisha, producing smoke. The smoke then enters the body of the hookah, passing through a glass receptacle containing water which filters and cools the smoke. The smoker inhales this smoke through a long hose with a mouth piece. This filtration is suggested to filter out, in part, tar and nicotine from the tobacco. However, most brands of shisha tobacco generally contain a mention saying “no tar” and very small amounts of nicotine (0.5%) to begin with.

Due to the mechanics of the hookah, multi-person hookahs exist, where multiple hoses lead to a single tobacco chamber. These are popular in the Western world where hookah smoking is a social phenomenon.
