The biggest complaint I hear is that a new hookah hose tastes like plastic. That, and the fact that the glue that holds the grommets in place tends to come loose, and tends to fall apart. Are there shops for hookah smoking accessories, like hookah coals, shisha tobacco, replacement bases, etc. in Oxford? I’m not looking for a hookah bar; I’ve got my own hookah, but am running low on supplies for it.

I’m going to assume you mean Oxford, England. Are you going to school there? Hopefully someone who lives there can clue you in as to where you can buy hookah supplies in your area. In the meantime, look at all of the online sites. They have everything from quick lights to flavored tobaccos to replacement parts. Stock up - you’ll be the hit (pardon the pun) of your dorm.

If you buy the cheap, “I just want some kind of hookah” hookah, you will always end up with a bad experience, and never get a real chance on what a good smoking session is.

So when I set up my hookah, I follow all the instructions and it works fine. However, I do not seem to be experiencing any real flavour, just smoke. I have a standard hookah and hoses and I use al-fakher branded hookah tobacco (atm I have double apple and cocktail). What am I doing/not doing that prevents me getting any flavour? I do put in quite a lot of tobacco, but i do not pack it above the bowl. Also I usually only use one quick lite coal: should I break it in half? The tobacco itself is in the tub and sealed, so I doubt it would lose flavour like that.

There could be a lot of sources, but since you say your’e getting smoke and just no flavor we can narrow it down a bit. AF is a decent brand and fairly flavorful especially the 2 you picked.

1) More tobacco. You probably need to put more tobacco in the bowl. It’s okay if it touches the foil. Too much air space broils the tobacco leading to smoke but little flavor.

2) Too Much Heat. Coals have the correlation of More Heat = Less Flavor but Huge Clouds. I would break my coals and half and light them. Start with 1/2 less than you normally use. And play with it the amount of coals. Take a half off, put one on. Until you find the right balance for your packing and bowl.

3) Your Coals. If you are using quicklights this can be the source. Quicklights have their additives that some can literally kill the taste of anything you smoke just by using them. Try switching to naturals. hookah-shisha.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=2652&idaffiliate=284

I started smoking hookah like in July of 2009. I bought starbuzz hookah and it was perfect and was hitting really good and was able to taste the flavor. Recently, I haven’t been able to taste any flavors. I have 3 different hookah’s and last week I bought a new one and still I can’t taste any flavor! Why? Can someone tell me what going on? And yes, I do clean my hookah everytime I use it. Remember I bought a new one and still no taste!

I smoke hookah a lot and have found I can’t really taste some flavors any more. I’ve noticed the really fruity ones are the easiest to taste.

I am not sure why you can’t taste ANY. It seems like you are doing all of the right things… clean hookah, new hookah, etc. Maybe it has something to do with your hoses? After a while my hoses started getting dusty and blocking the flavors. I went to rubber hoses and it worked much better. Also, maybe it’s your tobacco/sheesha that is old and not flavorful… have you gotten any of that new?

Scientific studies show that smoke reduces how well your taste buds work so unfortunately this may be the case too…

My advice is to get new tobacco that is in a fruity flavor, like melon, and stay away from light flavored ones like chocolate or honey. Maybe the new hoses will help. Also, make sure the coals are burning right on the tobacco because maybe the coals aren’t doing their job. Good luck!
